Following the violence and arson at the Amravati district, sub divisional police officer of Achalpur, Shivprasad Kudare, was placed under suspension earlier this week.
AMRAVATI: The first head rolled following the violence and arson at Achalpur town of Amravati district with the sub divisional police officer of Achalpur, Shivprasad Kudare, being placed under suspension earlier this week. Life in Achalpur, a sleepy but politically active town, was thrown out of gear following instances of arson and violence during a Durga idol immersion procession recently.
According to information, a probe report into the riots charged Kudare with dereliction of duty and hence he was placed under suspension. The probe revealed that on October 22 the idol immersion procession was passing by a place of worship of the minority community when someone from the processionists played a song that was objectionable to Muslims.
Some representatives of the minority community requested Kudare to ask the processionists to stop playing the objectionable song, but much to their chagrin, Kudare allegedly took action against them. As a result, verbal volleys between the communities turned into a violent exchange and within an hour Achalpur witnessed one of the worst incidents of arson and violence-shops were sets afire, houses damaged and people injured. The probe report has pegged the loss to property at Rs 2 crore. The report alleged had Kudare acted wisely, the violence could have been avoided, besides accusing him of hiding facts. Meanwhile, Achalpur is slowly limping back to normalcy. On Tuesday, educational institutions were re-opened after a week-long break. According to senior officials of the district administration, the situation is under control.
